In the past, bluebirds relied on woodpeckers and other cavity-dwellers to extend the vast majority of their nesting places. They would select abandoned cavities in trees that are dead or fence places that are rotten to raise their families. As development wiped out a number of those natural nesting sites, the population declined dramatically. But boxes have played a vital role in reviving the bluebird. They have requirements that are specific, therefore these DIY birdhouse plans are designed to meet their needs.

Diy birdhouse for bluebirdsBluebirds prefer to nest in open areas with low or sparse ground cover. The North American Bluebird Society, that provided the plans, says cemeteries rural areas, golf courses and parkways with human visitors are good areas to mount these boxes. Drive a 3/4-inch piece of conduit to the ground and attach the house 5 ft as shown in right. Attach a predator shield and coating the pipe with dirt to discourage nest raiders.
This bluebird box has a couple of interesting features worth pointing out. It’s assembled with the side of this timber facing out so that it resembles the birds’ natural sites. And there’s no perch. Notches beneath the entrance hole wrens and supply footing for bluebirds, but discourage visits from competing home sparrows.

The swing-open side is suitable, too. Since bluebirds raise as many as three broods in one season, you will want to do this immediately.

Best of all, the swing-open side will give you an opportunity to peek in on the nestlings for whom you have supplied a sturdy and secure home. The side door is great for monitoring the action in these birdhouses.
